A Yunnan journey works best when you leave room for mountain light, market mornings and the distinct histories of its towns.
Seven to nine days
Begin with a practical arrival stop in Kunming, spend two or three nights around Dali, then continue to Lijiang for three. Extend north only if you have time for higher elevation and longer transfers. A short trip need not include every celebrated town.
Old towns and daily life
Explore early and away from the most commercial streets. Markets, courtyard neighborhoods and nearby villages can offer a fuller picture than an evening shopping circuit alone. Ask permission before making portraits and treat inhabited spaces as homes.
Landscape choices
Lake scenery around Dali, mountain outings near Lijiang and a gorge excursion all require different transport and walking plans. Choose one major outdoor day at a time and keep the following morning light.
Elevation changes the plan
The region spans very different elevations. Check the actual altitude of overnight stops and excursions before committing. Avoid adding a demanding mountain outing immediately after a late arrival, and build flexibility into northern extensions.
